The 2008 Canadian Senior Curling Championships were a huge success. The event ran the entire week without any major problems and from all counts the players were very happy with everything that was done for them. The event saw huge fan support the entire week which the players loved. The successful event would not be possible without the many hours of work from over 200 volunnteers, and the sponsors. Those two groups are which make these events such a success. A big thank you to all the sponsors, volunnteers, and host committee for all their hard work and making the week very exciting. The week produced many close games, great shot making, and most important, fun!!. On the women's side of competition team British Columbia, skipped by Pat Sanders a former Canadian and World women's champion finished the round robin portion of the event with a 10 - 1 record, her only loss was to team Saskatchewan. The first place position earned a bye into the final on Sunday. Finishing in second and third place with an 8 - 3 record were teams Ontario and Alberta, these two teams faced off in the Semi - final Saturday evening. The game was close with team Ontario prevailing earning them a spot in the final where they faced team British Columbia. Team Saskatchewan skipped by Delores Syrota finished the round robin portion at 7 - 4, one game out of a playoff spot. The final was set, Team British Columbia and Team Ontario, the game was a close one with Team British Columbia prevailing and earning the National Championship, the team will now represent Canada at the World Seniors in New Zealand next March. Congratulations to team British Columbia and all team for a great week of competition. On the Men's side, the round robin portion finished with a three way tie for first place. Teams Saskatchewan ( Eugene Hrtziuk ) , Team New Brunswick ( Russ Howard ), and Team Nova Scotia ( Brian Rafuse ). With all three having one win against each other the tie break went to the team competition of draw to the button which was held during practise at the start of the week. Earning the first place spot and a trip to the final was Russ Howard and his New Brunswick rink. The semi - final saw teams Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia face off in front of a very large Saskatchewan crowd. The game was very good and came down to the last shot with team Saskatchewan prevailing and earning a trip into the final. The host committee couldn't of picked a better match up for the final, Team Saskacthewan and olympic gold medal champion in Russ Howard and New Brunswick. The game was a frustrating one for Howard as he had rocks pick early and on some key shots, however the game went on and saw some great shot making on both sides and was close the entire game. Team Saskatchewan had a draw to the four foot in the 10th end for the victory and Eugene did not disapoint the large crowd on the ice surface of Saskatchewan supporters and you could tell when he made his shot. Eugene and his team will now represent Canada at the Worlds Seniors in New Zealand next March. Congratulations to Team Saskatchewan and all teams for a great week.

The Prince Albert Golf and Curling Club is looking forward to the next National Championship. Next up is the 2009 Masters Provincial and the 2010 Junior Provincial |
